Benefits of Water Birth

With your baby coming to the world relatively soon, there are so many things you are probably thinking about. But most of these thoughts come into play once your baby is already here. Bringing your baby into the world is a huge topic that will likely be on your mind a lot for the next few months, so we thought to share some a glimpse of one of the options you may be considering: A water birth.

What is a water birth?

Put simply, a water birth is when a woman goes through labour and delivery inside a warm bathtub. Water births are a popular option for women who prefer to have a completely natural birth, with no medication or epidurals since it is commonly found that being submerged in water brings comfort for contractions and a more soothing and gentle experience of birth.

Benefits of Water Birth

Reduced Labour Pain

Women who have undergone water births often state that thanks to the buoyancy of the water, they experience less pain of labour and delivery. This is because when submerged in water, there is a chemical reaction in the brain that releases pain-inhibiting endorphins and hence helps regulate the intensity of contractions. Having dim lighting, soft music and aromatherapy during your birth, not only water births, can also help create a safe, relaxing and warm environment.

This is not to say that water births are painless!

A Strengthened Connection Between Mind, Body and Soul

According to some women, having less intense contractions allows there to be space for listening to the body, understanding its mechanism, and a larger acceptance for letting it do what it needs to do. In other words, it enables you to develop a deeper, empowered and more trusting connection between your mind and body through such an emotional process.

A Deeper Bond With Your Partner

Some women have said that the experience of having their partner involved in the water birth has deepened their bond significantly. We can see this in all kinds of different situations - sharing vulnerable and meaningful moments with other people is incredibly bonding and allows there to be closeness.

Although we are only talking about water births in this article, we believe that every birth experience is beautiful and can be equally as connective, bonding and emotional. Bringing life to the earth is extraordinary, and we can only wish you happiness and love.
